United sign sponsorship deal with Indian firm

Manchester United have signed a five-year sponsorship deal with an Indian communications company in the latest example of the European champions’ global commercial expansion.

The £10mil deal with telecom services provider Airtel was announced on Friday at Old Trafford.

“This partnership demonstrates the enduring strength of the club internationally,” United chief executive David Gill said. “This is a very exciting development because India is an area of commercial potential. We are looking at everything. Some might work, others might not.”

The Premier League champions are looking for a new shirt sponsor to replace insurance company AIG from the 2010-11 season.

Airtel customers across India, where cricket is the national sport, and Sri Lanka will now have access to United content, including matches and interviews.

“Football is accelerating fast behind cricket and one day I hope to see a young Indian boy wearing the red strip of United,” United manager Alex Ferguson said.
