Red Devils fall in Super Cup

Manchester United were left disappointed as they lost 2-1 to Zenit St Petersburg in the Super Cup in Monaco.

Paul Scholes was sent off as Manchester United's hopes of lifting the Super Cup ended. The former England midfielder got a second yellow for a deliberate handball in the area with United looking to draw level in the final moments of the match.

Pavel Pogrebnyak opened the scoring and Danny extended their lead before Nemanja Vidic pulled a goal back.

The Russians chalked up a notable double last season securing the UEFA Cup and their domestic title and it was obvious from the start their confidence was high and they took the match to United.

Pogrebnyak was quickly into the action and peeled away from his marker before spooning his effort over the top.

United responded and Tevez sent a shot into the body of Vyacheslav Maleev after 19 minutes.

Rooney almost put United ahead in the 35th minute after a surging run by Tevez only for the goalkeeper to make a marvellous block.
close range

Zenit hit back immediately and Ivica Krizanac came close after another good free kick from Dominguez.

Danny then headed wide in the 42nd minute before Pogrebnyak made the breakthrough. He headed in at the back post after Igor Denisov had flicked on a corner from Dominguez to leave United rattled.

Zenit stunned United again in the 60th minute by extending their lead with a magnificent effort from Danny.

He ran from deep, shrugged off Rio Ferdinand and cut inside before rifling a shot beyond Edwin Van der Sar.

United were stung but pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute when Vidic scored from close range after Tevez had cut the ball back from the by line.

Substitute John O'Shea almost pulled United level in the 86th minute, only to see his header tipped away by the goalkeeper.

Zenit then launched a swift counter attack and Danny chipped Van der Sar but his effort went over the bar.

United's irritation at playing second fiddle to Zenit was emphasised at the death with Scholes dismissed and he will now be suspended for the home Champions League game against Villarreal.

Sonko completes Potters switch

Stoke City have signed defender Ibrahima Sonko on a three-year deal from Reading.

The 27-year-old moves to the Potters after four years with the Royals where he was a mainstay of the squad that claimed promotion to the Premier League, although his appearances in their two-year stay in the top flight were restricted by injury.

The deal will initially cost the newly-promoted club £2million potentially rising to £2.25million.

Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes told the club's official website: "We are delighted to make Ibrahima the club's latest signing.

"He is a quality addition to the squad and comes with plenty of Premier League experience having played in the top flight with Reading."

unofficial friendly

Sonko made 122 league starts for the Royals following his transfer from Brentford and quickly established himself at the heart of their central defence.

Sonko has captained Senegal Under-23s but is still eligible to play for France - where he lived from the age of six months - because his only appearance for the Senegal senior side came in an unofficial friendly.

Sonko is Stoke's seventh signing of the summer and follows fellow ex-Royal Dave Kitson to the Britannia Stadium, as well as Seyi Olofinjana, Thomas Sorensen, Abdoulaye Faye, Andrew Davies and Amdy Faye.

Meanwhile the club have confirmed midfielder Anthony Pulis has joined Championship side Southampton on a free transfer.

The 24 year-old son of Potters manager Tony Pulis has signed a two-year deal with an option of a third, while youngester Ryan Shotton has joined League One side Tranmere Rovers on a month's loan.

Milner Go Villa

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Newcastle United winger James Milner on a four-year contract.

The England Under-21 international has put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at Villa Park until the summer of 2012.

Milner underwent a medical at Bodymoor Heath, and has made the move from the north-east for a fee believed to be in the region of £10million.

The 22-year-old could come into contention to play for Martin O'Neill's side against Liverpool at Villa Park on Sunday.

It is a case of O'Neill finally getting his man, two years after he had come within minutes of snapping up the former Leeds United player.

Milner spent the entire 2005/06 campaign on loan at Villa, and a permanent deal was set to go through in August 2006.

But Newcastle pulled out of the deal at the 11th hour after failing at that stage to sign Mark Viduka

PROBLEM AREA

Milner signed a new four-year contract last summer with the Magpies, but last week handed in a transfer request.

Villa, who are understood to have had an earlier bid rejected by Newcastle, have now moved swiftly to sign the right-sided player.

That has been a problem area for O'Neill, and Nigel Reo-Coker and Craig Gardner have been employed there to breach the gap.

Milner becomes O'Neill's seventh signing of the summer and will further bolster the squad after they booked a place in the first round proper of the UEFA Cup for the first time in seven years.

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan said: "He's a player, in an ideal world, you would not want to lose, but I just want to make it absolutely clear that at the end of the day, it was my decision to sell him.

"We got an offer that I feel was his value. We are all aware James has had a difficult time - he almost signed for them once before and was dragged back.
"But he has always behaved impeccably. He's a fantastic professional, and there's no doubt about it, they've got an outstanding player and we have got to move on."

Senderos makes Milan move

Arsenal have confirmed defender Philippe Senderos has joined AC Milan on a season-long loan.

Senderos underwent a medical in Italy on Tuesday and the deal has now been completed.

The 23-year-old centre-back could return to the Emirates Stadium next season.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was happy to see him leave on a temporary basis due to the large number of defenders in his squad.

Wenger said earlier this week: "At the moment, he does not get the games here, and so now he can play somewhere and remains in a top-level club.

"We have [Johan] Djourou, we have Kolo [Toure], we have Senderos, we have [Alex] Song, [William] Gallas and [Mikael] Silvestre now who can play centre-back so we have a congestion there.

"We want him to play without losing him."

Dortmund seal Lee move

Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Young-Pyo Lee from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 31-year-old South Korea defender on Wednesday signed a one-year contract with the Bundesliga outfit, bringing to an end a three-year spell at White Hart Lane.

Lee played 93 times for Spurs since joining from PSV Eindhoven in August 2003.

A statement on Dortmund's official website read: "Borussia Dortmund have signed the 97-times capped South Korea international Young-Pyo Lee from English Premier League side Tottenham."

Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has chosen to bring in Lee after regular left-back Dede was ruled out for six months with a knee ligament injury.

The Brazilian suffered the injury in his side's opening match of the new season, a 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen.

Kranjcar injury blow

Portsmouth are set to be without Niko Kranjcar for three months due to an ankle injury.

The midfielder ruptured ankle ligaments while on international duty for Croatia against Slovenia last week and underwent an operation.

A statement on Portsmouth's website read: "The operation took place at the Hampshire Clinic in Basingstoke and was performed by James Calder, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialist in foot and ankle surgery.

"The same surgeon operated on former Pompey player Pedro Mendes last season when he had a similar injury.

"Blues club doctor, Nigel Sellars, attended the operation along with the orthopaedic surgeon to the Croatia national team.

"The 24-year-old will wear a non-weight bearing case for three weeks before beginning rehabilitation. He faces an estimated eight to 12 weeks before being able to play first-team football again."

Barry staying at Villa

Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry has pledged his immediate future to the club.

The England international has been a transfer target for Barclays Premier League rivals Liverpool since the end of last season, but the two clubs were unable to agree on a fee.

Barry was disciplined by Villa earlier in the summer after criticising manager Martin O'Neill's handling of the saga, and made it clear he wanted to move to Anfield.

But the midfielder has since been welcomed back into the fold and his agent, Alex Black, has confirmed that he will not be on the move during the current transfer window.

Black admitted that Barry made the decision to stay at Villa Park a fortnight ago, and talks over any new deal will now not take place until the end of the season.

Black said: "After much speculation I can confirm that Gareth Barry will not leave Aston Villa before the transfer window closes.

"Gareth made the decision to stay two weeks ago and informed Aston Villa of his intentions.

"During this time discussions have taken place to decide the best way forward for all parties.

"Any talks regarding potential new contracts at Aston Villa will not take place until the end of the season.

"Gareth wants to concentrate on playing on the best of his ability for Aston Villa, and we hope this draws a line under the matter."

Anton signs for Sunderland

Sunderland have completed the signing of West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand for an undisclosed fee.

The England Under-21 centre-back has agreed a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light to become manager Roy Keane's ninth summer signing.

Keane told the club website: "We needed to strengthen our defence and Anton is a great signing. He is still young but has over 160 games under his belt so he has experience, he's at a good age.

"He will bring quality and competition for places which is what we want, Hopefully we can take him to another level. He has come through the ranks at West Ham and maybe just needs a change."

Ferdinand said: "It was hard leaving West Ham because I have been there for 16 years but after meeting Roy Keane I knew it was time for a change.

"This is a great challenge for me and I feel it is an exciting time at Sunderland. I think the move will do me good and bring the best out of me. I can't wait to get going."

Keane has hinted that Ferdinand may not be his last capture before the close of the transfer window on Monday 1st September.

He added: "I have one more player in mind and then that is the end of it for a few months at least."

Milner hands in transfer request

Newcastle United winger James Milner has handed in a transfer request at St James' Park.

The England Under 21 international is a reported summer target for Aston Villa, where he spent a successful season on loan in 2005/06.

Kevin Keegan is eager to retain Milner's services and sees him as an integral part of the club's long-term plans.

The winger scored one and created another in the Magpies' 3-2 extra-time victory over Coventry City in the Carling Cup second round on Tuesday night.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Newcastle United can confirm that it has received a written transfer request from James Milner.

"The club is very disappointed that James sees his footballing future as being away from St James' Park. He is a valued member of the squad and it is only a year ago that he signed an improved long-term contract.

"We have yet to receive an offer for James that has matched our valuation of him.

"However, should such an offer be received then the club would be forced to consider it, given James' apparent

Blackburn sign Grella

Blackburn Rovers have completed the signing of Australian international Vince Grella.

The 28-year-old central midfielder has completed the switch from Torino for an undisclosed fee and he has signed a four-year deal.

Grella ends a ten-year stint playing in Italy having first arrived in Serie A in 1998 when he joined Empoli.

He joined Parma in 2004 and Torino in 2007, but he has now sealed his move to the Barclays Premier League where he will link-up with Australian international team-mate Brett Emerton.

Grella caught the eye with his displays as Australia qualified for the second-round of the 2006 World Cup in Germany before bowing out to Italy. He was named in a preliminary squad for FIFA's team of the tournament, the only Australian to make the list.

Blackburn have picked up four points from their opening two Barclays Premier League matches and travel to West Ham United on Saturday.

Arsenal's new youth policy

Arsenal have launched their "Be a Gooner, Be a Giver" campaign in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The Gunners are renowned for bringing young talent through the ranks, often propelling them to stardom and a long, successful career in the game. So it is perhaps apt that their chosen charity for the 2008/09 season is The Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT).

Through the 'Be A Gooner. Be A Giver.' campaign, the north London giants will aim to raise £300,000 to increase its support for teenagers and young adults with cancer in London and the South East by building a unit within a brand new Day Care Centre at University College Hospital, London.

The omens are good for TCT as last season the club handed over £500,000 to its nominated charity TreeHouse, more than doubling the target of £250,000. The money raised funded new sports facilities within the charity's new national centre for autism education.

Each day in the UK up to six teenagers or young adults [between the ages of 13 and 24] are diagnosed with cancer. That is over 2000 cases a year. Many find themselves receiving treatment without the support network they need. Until 16, a patient is likely to be treated in a paediatric ward alongside toddlers. If the diagnosis is made after that age, they are likely to end up in an adult ward, in many cases alongside elderly people. The benefits of young people being able to receive treatment alongside those their own age cannot be understated.

"I think this place is great," says Harry Jeffrey, an 18-year-old Osteosarcoma sufferer. "It's nice having people you can relate to of your own age. You meet people you wouldn't necessarily meet in everyday life. I think it's great that Arsenal are going to donate money."

Harry is sitting in the common room, which among other amusements contains a wide screen television and pool table. And of course his friends. These combined factors help to make treatment days more bearable for all the patients in the TCT unit.

Fundraising initiatives by players, staff and supporters will fund an Education Zone in the TCT's unit in the Centre which is due to open in 2012. It will be the first of its kind in Europe, with building set to commence in 2010. Here young people will be able to maintain their studies and also learn more about their cancer. The zone will include computers and laptops with wireless access, enabling them to contact their school, and keep in touch with their friends.

The partnership was officially launched on Thursday 20th August, with Arsene Wenger, Cesc Fabregas, Manuel Almunia and Arsenal Ladies and England captain, Faye White given a tour of the TCT's existing unit by Roger Daltrey CBE, lead singer of The Who, Patron of Teenage Cancer Trust and huge Arsenal fan.

"It makes you feel fortunate for what you have," said Fabregas. "Sometimes at our age we think we know everything and we don't know anything. That's the truth."

Wenger was also touched by what he saw in the ward. The Frenchman even came face-to-face with a former academy player. Bone-cancer sufferer Jack Chester, 17, spent three years in the club's academy as a goalkeeper.

Several of the children who met Wenger, Fabregas and Almunia are Arsenal fans. A few weeks ago some of them were fortunate enough to visit the Emirates Stadium and meet some of the other players, as Harry recalls: "Some of my friends got to meet the players and got their autographs. They actually got to go in a box."

Harry beams with enthusiasm as he tells of his friends' experience in the 60,000 Emirates. Another patient walking around with a huge smile on her face is Gemma Ozdemir. The 16-year-old is clutching a local newspaper with a picture of her and the club's star summer signing Samir Nasri on the pitch. "It felt like I was dreaming," she says, with a look of utter contentment.

Like her friend Harry, Gemma is impressed by her surroundings and believes having people of a similar age around her is priceless in her battle against cancer. "All the teenagers are really funny," she enthuses. "The staff are really great. It's very big, new and modern. We've even got big screen TVs."

The Emirates Stadium is visible from the 12th floor of the University College Hospital where the children can see far into the distance at the city around them.

Harry points out that its central location is a key element while also stressing that the unit is invaluable to parents who can talk to other parents of children suffering with cancer.

Director of Communications Lucy Jackson is positive about the possibilities that Arsenal will open up for the TCT.

"We're really excited to be working with Arsenal," she says. "It's a great privilege and a great way to raise funds and awareness of the charity. It's amazing to be building a daycare centre that will improve the lives of others."

Arsenal's input is all the more significant when one considers that in the last 30 years the incidence of cancer in the teenage and young adult group has increased by 50% and for the first time ever, the number of teens with cancer now exceeds the number of children with cancer. Teenagers also contract some of the most aggressive cancers that are made worse by their growth spurts.

But Daltrey points to anecdotal evidence of teenagers' conditions improving because of the support network provided by their peers.

"There have been cases of 15% improvement on applications of the very same drug, just because these units are filled with other teens," he stresses. "When you're a teen, the last thing you want is isolation. The camaraderie TCT provides is where the change begins, and I've seen this charity change lives forever."

Bruce keen on strike duo

Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce says Emile Heskey will not be sold and Henri Camara has a future at the club.

After seeing his side beat Notts County 4-0 in the Carling Cup, Bruce was forced to fend off questions about the future of England striker Heskey.

"It would take a hell of an offer to let him go but I've not heard anything from anyone and I don't envisage anything happening at this late stage," said Bruce ahead of the closure of the transfer window which has been extended to midnight on September 1.

Heskey was replaced by Amr Zaki at half-time and the real star of the show was Senegal striker Camara, who breathed life into his career with his first goals in 20 months.

Camara, 31, spent the whole of last season on loan at West Ham but failed to score. The nomadic forward returned to the JJB Stadium in the summer and was told by Bruce he was welcome to stay and fight for his place.

Camara took full advantage of his first start of the season by netting with a superb 32nd-minute opener to shatter the resistance of the Magpies.

He scored again with a clinical header in the 62nd minute - two minutes after Zaki had made the match safe with a close-range tap-in.

Bruce said: "I have seen Camara play against my teams in the past and score against us.

"I didn't even know what was happening with him in the summer but he's now here for another year and I'm sure he's got a part to play.

"He complements my other strikers like Heskey and Antoine Sibierski and he gives me something different."

Fowler's waiting game

Blackburn Rovers trialist Robbie Fowler will sit out the Carling Cup tie with Grimsby Town.

The 33-year-old striker has been training with Rovers this summer following his release by Cardiff but has so far turned down the offer of a pay-as-you-play deal with the club.

His former Liverpool and England team-mate Paul Ince is now in charge at Ewood Park and had hoped to utilise the veteran forward this season.

However, Fowler is holding out for a longer contract than the one currently on offer and will miss the opportunity to prove his fitness against Grimsby.

"The situation with Robbie is still up in the air, so he won't be involved against Grimsby," said Ince.

"These things do take time, especially when the agent gets involved. I'm not unsure about Robbie, I'm just unsure as to when it will get done.

"There is no deadline, though, because he is a free agent and not tied down to the transfer window."

While being forced to accept that Fowler will play no part against the Mariners, Ince will still use the match to rest a number of his first-team regulars.

"Andre Ooijer and Roque Santa Cruz played 90 minutes for their national teams last week and again against Hull at the weekend," he added.

"I'm not happy about that and I'll be speaking to their international managers about it, but they will need a break."

Richards released from hospital

Micah Richards' neck injury is not as bad as first feared, with the Manchester City man being released from hospital.

The City star was carried from the field on a stretcher during the Blues' 3-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday.

Medical staff tended to the centre-half for 10 minutes before removing him from the playing surface, securing a neck brace to the problematic area in an attempt to reduce the risk of further aggravating the knock.
