Malaysia Super League: Kelantan can play in Kota Baru

KELANTAN at last had their wish to return to their home ground granted when the FA of Malaysia (FAM) lifted a season-long ban on the Sultan Mohamad IV Stadium in Kota Baru yesterday.
FAM's competitions committee endorsed the recommendation by the disciplinary board (DB) to revoke the suspension, which had Kelantan FA (Kafa) teetering on the verge of financial collapse, and allow them to continue playing after veiled threats of withdrawing from the Super League.

However, FAM said in a statement that Kelantan would first have to fulfil certain obligations before their next home match against UPB FC-MyTeam on June 16.

Kafa president Tan Sri Annuar Musa, in expressing his gratitude to FAM, believes the stadium will be ready with beefed up security measures.

"In a way this decision has come as a pleasant surprise to us as we only sent in our second appeal letter on Monday.
"I'm happy with the decision and I am quite grateful to FAM and the media, which I think helped shape public opinion and ensured the DB looked at the bigger picture," said Annuar yesterday.

The ban, which was imposed due to an outbreak of violence outside the stadium after the FA Cup semi-final first leg between Kelantan and Negri Sembilan on Apr 7, is the second time FAM has reversed itself in a case involving Kelantan.

FAM last month also cancelled its decision to award three points to KL Plus for the washed out opening Super League fixture against Kelantan in Kota Baru after finding the Sultan Mohamed IV Stadium pitch unsuitable for play.

Kelantan went on to win the re-scheduled fixture 1-0 at the National Stadium, their first win at their temporary home venue, last Tuesday.

That win ended a five-match losing run in the Super League and Annuar hopes the return to Kota Baru will mark an up tick in their fortunes on the pitch.

"I hope this will spur the team on to play their best and I think it will have a positive effect on them. But the fans must learn from this because if their attitudes don't change, they are indirectly killing football in the state," said Annuar.

On the extra security measures, Annuar added: "We are working together with the stadium board to improve certain security aspects.

"We have built a tunnel leading from the dressing room to the pitch at a cost of RM30,000. We have also put up security fencing at the entrance and moved counter tickets away from the grandstand area to ease the burden on the security personnel.

"We have also asked the supporters clubs to play their role and we're looking at other aspects of the security measures."

The stadium ban has cost Kelantan nearly a million ringgit in lost revenue and extra costs which led Annuar to consider pulling the team out of the league.

"We were heading towards disaster because of the ban as on average we lost RM150,000 on the four matches we had to play away.

"If you add the cost of transport and accommodation it adds up to quite a bit. The improvements on the stadium also costs money although I believe we will be reimbursed for that. Hopefully we can make up for the losses," said Annuar, referring to the team's remaining five home games in the league.

Kelantan fans will be given a treat as Kafa plan to mark the re-opening of the stadium with a friendly against Premier League side Proton on June 5 and another against FA Cup champions Selangor on June 9. Entry is free for both matches

German Cup final: Diego wants cup success

BERLIN: Brazilian midfielder Diego has pledged to give his all in today's German Cup final for Werder Bremen against Bayer Leverkusen when he will play his last game before joining Italian giants Juventus.
The 24-year-old has signed a five-year deal worth E 24.5 million (RM120 million) which will take him to Italy, but admits today's German Cup final at Berlin's Olympic Stadium is very important to him.

"This game will be my most important - not only with Werder but in my whole life," said Diego who has won 34 caps for Brazil.

"I am very happy that I have a chance of giving something back for all the devotion that was given to me in Bremen.

"I am top motivated and will give everything I have in Berlin."
Both Bremen and Leverkusen under-achieved this season, finishing mid-table in the Bundesliga, while Saturday's showcase final provides them with a chance to win some much needed silverware.

Werder lost last week's UEFA Cup final to Shakhtar Donetsk in Istanbul and coach Thomas Schaaf is desperate to finish the season with a win.

Bremen have won the trophy five times while Nuremberg have lifted the cup four times and the last time was in 2007 when they beat Stuttgart 3-2 after extra-time. -- AFP

Malaysia Super League: Chance for Perlis to go back to the top

PERLIS can overcome the setback of losing their unbeaten home record on Tuesday by reclaiming top spot in the Malaysian Super League when they make the short trip to Alor Star to take on a wounded Kedah.
Irfan Bakti Abu Salim's side were besides themselves in the 2-0 defeat to Terengganu at the Utama Stadium, which not only saw them fall two points behind Selangor, but also ended a 17-match undefeated run in Kangar.

But the Perlis coach shrugged off the defeat as just a bad day at the office as he looks to guide them back on track.

"It was just not our day. We beat Terengganu away but unfortunately we lost our unbeaten home record to them.

"Now we have to get back to our winning ways as we need the three points to go to the top, even if it is only for a short while because we would have played a game more than Selangor," said Irfan, who is striving to lead Perlis to their first league title since 2005.
But even as Perlis hope to pile the misery on Kedah, who have lost their last three matches, they may have to do so without striker Nizaruddin Yusof, who scored the only goal when the two sides met in Kangar on Jan 13.

Nizaruddin, with 14 goals to his name this season, is struggling with a groin problem and is only said to have an even chance of playing, with Ahmad Fakri Saarani and Firdaus Faudzi likely to start together if the international striker is not passed fit.

"Nizaruddin is only 50-50 whether he plays or not as he has a groin injury. But we have capable replacements in Fakri and Firdaus. So I don't think that would be a problem.

"But when it comes to Kedah, it is always a close affair, and now that they are struggling a little we need to take advantage of that," added Irfan.

Perlis also have goalkeeper Farizal Marlias and defender Mazlizam Mohamad available after the duo were dropped from the national Under-23 squad's tour of China.

Midfielder Amar Rohidan, however, has been granted temporary leave from national Under-23 training to take his place in the Perlis starting lineup.

Final UEFA Champions League : Sweet memories for Henry

ROME: Barcelona striker Thierry Henry said his side's 2-0 Champions League final triumph over Manchester United will stay long in the memory, while beaten goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was at a loss to explain why his side failed to reproduce their top form.
Henry was in the Arsenal side who lost to Barcelona at Paris' Stade de France in 2006 and said the taste of Champions League victory was all the sweeter.

"This victory will remain engraved in my memory," said the 31-year-old. "I had already known this kind of emotion when we won the Premier League title with Arsenal.

"It is something special to win the treble, it is a part of history." -- AFP

FA Cup final : Cahill could ruin Hiddink's farewell

LONDON: Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink fears Australia star Tim Cahill could wreck his FA Cup final farewell at Wembley.
Hiddink takes charge of Chelsea for the last time against Everton tomorrow knowing a familiar face has the ability to send him back to Russia on a low note.

The Dutchman, who resumes his role as Russia coach on a full-time basis after the Cup Final, worked with Everton midfielder Cahill during his spell as Australia coach.

Cahill thrived under Hiddink's management and the duo helped the Socceroos reach the last 16 of the 2006 World Cup.

Hiddink's impact on Cahill was so strong that the 29-year-old described him as a "genius".
Mention of Cahill's name drew an equally warm response from Hiddink at his club's pre-Wembley press conference this week, but the Chelsea chief knows his former player will be desperate to get one over on him at Wembley.

"I'm always a little scared when words like genius are used. I'm human and have my errors," Hiddink said.

"But of course I know Tim from my Aussie period. It was beautiful to have him in my own squad but having him as an opponent is not nice.

"He is very determined and very decisive. Everton are very organised and he is the kind of player who can make a big impact on top of that discipline.

"He is a wonderful talent, very sharp, full of impact and dangerous around the box."

If Hiddink can find a way to subdue Cahill, Chelsea's chances of sending him off in style will be greatly increased, but regardless of the result tomorrow his brief reign has left him keen to sample life in the Premier League again.

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is the favourite to succeed Hiddink, but, given owner Roman Abramovich's habit of replacing managers on a whim, it would be no surprise if Chelsea are looking for another boss sooner rather than later.

Hiddink made no attempt to hide his love of the English game and he would clearly consider a return to Chelsea once his Russian commitments are over after the 2010 World Cup. -- AFP

MSL: Champions Kedah get Azraai boost against Perlis

KEDAH received a timely boost with coach Azraai Khor Abdullah set to return to the bench for a crunch Malaysian Super League northern derby against Perlis at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Star tomorrow.
Azraai was absent through illness from the match against Perak in Ipoh on Tuesday and the defending champions lost 1-0 to extend their losing run to three matches in all competitions.

The defeat was hard to swallow for Azraai, as from the feedback he received, the game was there for their taking.

"From what I have been told, the team played well and only miscommunication between the defenders and the goalkeeper (Helmi Eliza Elias) led to the goal," said Azraai yesterday.

"Now we need to get back on track by beating Perlis and being a northern derby we can expect a fiery match. It is an important clash for both teams as Perlis want to get back on top while we need to close the gap on Selangor."
Kedah, fourth in the standings on 31 points, trail leaders Selangor by nine points with Perlis second, another two points adrift.

The recent poor run has come as a bit of a shock to Kedah players and fans alike.

After picking up just one point from their first four league matches, Kedah went on a splendid run to rise to third in the table and reach the second round of the AFC Cup.

But a 3-1 defeat by Chonburi in their final AFC Cup group match was quickly followed by a loss to Selangor in Shah Alam by the same score before going down to Perak.

"We're on a bad run and it has come as a shock to the players. I met them yesterday (Wednesday) to conduct a post-mortem and they themselves can't believe what has happened, especially against Perak.

"But we have to pick ourselves up and get ready for Perlis," added Azraai, who will again be without winger Baddrol Bakhtiar who missed the Perak defeat through a groin injury.

But Khyril Muhymeen Zambri and Sabre Mat Abu have secured temporary releases from national Under-23 training for the tie which has been brought forward from June 23 to accommodate their AFC Cup second round tie against Vietnam's Binh Duong.

FA Cup final : Moyes handed boost ahead of Wembley clash

LONDON: Everton manager David Moyes received the perfect boost ahead of Saturday's FA Cup final with Chelsea when he was awarded the League Managers' Association's (LMA) Manager of the Year award on Tuesday for a record third time.
The 46-year-old Scotsman has worked wonders on a relatively limited budget to take Everton not only to the FA Cup final but also to fifth place in the Premier League and a place in the new Europa Cup next season.

"Since joining Everton, David has not only transformed the club's fortunes, he has also created a huge fan base, including many of his fellow managers," said LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson.

"With only modest financial backing he has shown what can be achieved through discipline, dedication and an innate ability to get the best out of every player."

Moyes, who made his name as a manager at Preston North End before leaving for Everton in 2002, won the award previously in 2003 and 2005.
Manchester United manager and fellow Scot Sir Alex Ferguson won the LMA Special Merit Award for his success this season which has seen him guide United to the Premier League title and the League Cup.

On Wednesday United could become the first team to successfully defend their Champions League title when they play Barcelona in Rome.

It was a good night for the Ferguson family as his son Darren picked up the League One award for taking Peterborough up to the Championship while former Republic of Ireland handler Mick McCarthy won the Championship award for his stewardship of Wolves, who have been promoted to the Premier League.

Brentford's Andy Scott was named as the League

FA Cup final : Baines: Everton can give Chelsea the blues

LONDON: Everton are more than capable of pulling off an FA Cup final shock against Chelsea on Saturday according to left-back Leighton Baines.
The Merseyside club are preparing for their first FA Cup final since beating Manchester United 1-0 in 1995 and Baines believes that, although Everton will be regarded as underdogs for the tie, they can still defeat Guus Hiddink's side at Wembley.

The English national stadium, reopened after rebuilding in 2007, played host to several famous giant-killing acts in its old guise.

Wimbledon stunned Liverpool in 1988, Sunderland, then in the second tier, beat Leeds, then a major European force, in 1973 and West Ham, another second tier team at the time, shocked Arsenal in 1980.

Although an Everton win wouldn't be quite so remarkable, it would still register as a significant surprise given Chelsea's vast resources and the depth of talent at Stamford Bridge.
"It's a game we have to believe we can win," Baines said. "We have to believe we can go and put in a good performance.

"It is always tough playing a side like Chelsea and I think it has been a long time since we have beaten them.

"But we have taken a point in both league matches this season and that will give us confidence going into the game."

Everton beat Manchester United on penalties in the semi-finals this season, which also took place at Wembley.

Toffees manager David Moyes has previously criticised the decision to play the last four ties there after outlining his opinion that the final should be kept as the only fixture played at Wembley to preserve the FA Cup's unique nature.

Baines agrees and he said: "I think the general opinion among those you speak to and among the players is that the semi-finals wouldn't be played at Wembley.

"You want the final to be there and that makes it extra-special. But it has been fantastic for us though because it has given the lads here the chance to play there beforehand and get the experience of playing there." -- AFP

EPL: Reports: Shearer to be offered four-year deal

LONDON: Alan Shearer is set to be offered a four-year contract to stay on as manager of relegated Newcastle, according to reports in England.
Shearer's spell as interim manager ended with Toon's final game of the season at Aston Villa, but owner Mike Ashley was reportedly due to meet with the former England striker to discuss the terms of a permanent contract.

Ashley knows that Shearer's popularity among Newcastle fans and his standing in the game will be major assets as the long slog to restore the club's credibility and Premier League status begins in the close-season.

For the first time in 16 years, Newcastle are no longer a top-flight club, but Shearer has no intention of feeling sorry for himself.

The Newcastle legend, who took charge for the final eight games of the season after Joe Kinnear's heart surgery, met the squad for an end of season debriefing on Monday and reportedly told them there would a major overhaul of the playing staff if he stays.
"If I'm here next season, there are going to be big, big changes," the Times quotes him as saying.

Newcastle's annual wage bill is estimated at around STG74 million (RM416 million) and Shearer is willing to axe high-earning flops like Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Claudio Cacapa and Peter Lovenkrands, who are all out of contract.

Fabricio Coloccini, Geremi, Obafemi Martins, Alan Smith, Jose Enrique and Jonas Gutierrez could also be sold.

Shearer added: "The problem this club has got is that the other Championship clubs have already started preparing regarding players and everything else.

"Newcastle are already lagging behind. The sooner a decision is made the better for everyone.

"We need to look at it with a clear head. I will give my opinion on what is wrong and what needs to be done."

Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias made it clear that Ashley and his board have no qualms about giving Shearer the job permanently despite his lack of experience.

Llambias said: "We want him to be the manager 110 per cent. He's very good at what he does and he's a straight-talking guy -- we like that. He would be the perfect appointment.

"We are going to review the situation. We are trying to sort something and we will give the public some information as soon as possible.

"Alan has put a lot of work into the job at Newcastle and we are talking to him now." -- AFP

MSL: Kelantan finally get a break

KELANTAN have been on the road for the past three weeks spending little time on the training ground and this has led to their recent slump in the Super League.
Battling fatigue and low confidence, the east coast side finally got a much needed win when they edged KL Plus 1-0 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.

The Kelantan FA (Kafa) hopes its side will lift their play after this victory.

Prior to Tuesday's win, Kelantan were struggling to find their momentum after the FA of Malaysia (FAM) banned them from playing their home matches at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru on April 11.

The win, their first after a six-match losing streak, is timely as the players can now build on this victory before their next match against UPB-MyTeam on July 16.
Kelantan coach Peter Butler said the win is a a psychological lift for his charges.

"There's always pressure when your team are not winning, so I'm very happy my boys did well today (Tuesday)," said Butler.

"The players have been on the road for the past three weeks and are very tired. The long break will allow them to rejuvenate."

Butler added: "The past three weeks were awful and I hope the players will build from this win in order to come back stronger and meaner."

The coach dropped several regulars for Tuesday's match including skipper Mohd Badri Radzi (bench), centreback Ahmad Azlan Zainal and strikers Khalid Jamlus and Mohd Norfarhan Mohamad (bench).

"I felt these players needed to shape up. Some were getting sloppy and looked tired, probably because of the travelling. Anyway, their replacements gave a good account of themselves," he said.

Butler said his task during the break is to whip the team into a stronger unit.

"We will play a couple of friendly matches to keep the team's momentum."

Kelantan's friendly matches are against Proton FC (June 6) and Selangor (June 9).

Kedah, without their coach Azraai Khor who was sick, suffered their second straight defeat going down 1-0 to Perak in Ipoh. The double treble champions failed to take their chances after Razali Umar Kandasamy scored for Perak in the 47th minute.

Rajagobal: Core of players will be decided from China tour

THE door remains open to others but the core of the Under-23 squad for the Merdeka Cup in August and December's Laos Sea Games will come from the 24 players going for the China tour on June 1-10.
Coach K. Rajagobal has yet to name the players for the China trip.

The Malaysian team will play China Super League side Shanghai Shenhua on June 6 and Premier League teams Nanchang FC on June 3 and Shanghai Zhong FC on June 8.

Shanghai Shenhua, who have five imports and five internationals, are currently fourth in the China Super League and will be the national team's strongest opponents in the tour.

The China tour is arranged by the FA of Malaysia as a replacement for the cancelled Under-23 Inter-Continental Championships.
"It will be an important tour to make sure we stay on the right path in terms of team development," said Rajagobal yesterday.

"It allows me to test my players and also identify areas which need to be improved. As for now, it's pretty hard to judge their progress from just two previous friendly matches. My main priority is to see them gel."

The national Under-23 side started a series of friendly matches with a 0-0 draw with Selangor before defeating Singapore 3-0 recently.

After the tour, the national Under-23 team will face Indonesia on June 13 in Kuala Lumpur.

Strachan leaves Celtic

GLASGOW: Gordon Strachan resigned as Celtic manager yesterday 24 hours after his team's failure to retain the Scottish Premier League title.
Strachan's side finished second behind Glasgow rivals Rangers for the first time in four years following Sunday's 0-0 draw with Hearts at Parkhead.

Strachan, who won three titles and three domestic cups in his four years in charge, is reported to be considering a move to Sunderland.

Celtic confirmed Strachan's departure on their website and Strachan said: "I have enjoyed my time immensely at Celtic and clearly I will be sad to leave this great club."

Celtic chief executive Lawwell paid tribute to the former Southampton and Coventry boss's achievements at Parkhead.
"Gordon has given everything to the club and worked tirelessly to bring success to Celtic," Lawwell said. "It has been a pleasure to work closely with Gordon and he leaves the club with all our best wishes." -- AFP

Kelantan to pull out of MSL?

THE sun is no longer shining on Kelantan as after a good start to the Malaysian Super League the East Coast side are currently in a mess following the team being barred from playing their home matches at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru.
The Kelantan FA (Kafa) is also financially drained while the team are suffering from fatigue as they have been travelling from Kota Baru on a regular basis to play their home matches at a near-empty National Stadium in Bukit Jalil and also for away ties.

Once at the top of the Super League standings, Kelantan, after five straight defeats, have dropped to seventh and Kafa believes that the team's decline is due mainly to the FA of Malaysia's (FAM) decision last month to bar them from playing at home.

Kafa's appeal was also rejected by FAM's Appeals Board recently.

All this has left Kafa with only one alternative -- to withdraw from the league.
A reliable source said Kafa is seriously considering the drastic measure if nothing positive comes from its internal meeting in Kota Baru next week.

"Kafa will decide the next move after examining the current financial and other logistical reports. The association may appeal again to FAM by offering other alternatives," said the source yesterday.

The source said one of the alternatives is for Kelantan to play their home matches in a neighbouring state.

"Terengganu will be one of the options. The other alternative is to play in an empty stadium in Kota Baru."

"Kafa hopes FAM will relent a little failing which the association will have no choice but to withdraw," the source added.

Meanwhile, Kelantan coach Peter Butler hopes his players will rise the to occasion against KL Plus today.

"It boils down to fatigue. The players are feeling the strain but I told them to fight on. They need a win badly to raise their confidence," said Butler.

England FA Cup - Fabregas not guilty

LONDON: Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has been cleared of a charge of spitting at Hull City’s assistant manager after an FA Cup match in March.

“The FA can confirm that, at a Regulatory Commission hearing, two charges of improper conduct against Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas were found not proved,” a statement on the FA’s website (www.thefa.com) said yesterday.

Fabregas, who did not play in the match, was charged with improper conduct last month after he was accused of spitting at Hull’s Brian Horton. The Spaniard protested his innocence.

The other charge concerned his conduct after coming on to the pitch at the end of the match which Arsenal won 2-1. — Reuters

Premier League - Magpies eye a point and hope fellow strugglers Hull fall to United

LONDON: Newcastle’s hopes of avoiding becoming the biggest Premier League casualty since Leeds were relegated from the top flight in 2004 have been hit by an injury crisis that could have catastrophic consequences for the club.

Alan Shearer’s side go into their final match of the season, at Aston Villa tomorrow, needing to secure at least a point while hoping that a second-string Manchester United side is good enough to beat Hull, who kick off the final weekend in the last survival spot and with a one point edge over the Magpies.

With full-backs Habib Beye and Jose Enrique both very doubtful and centreback Sebastien Bassong suspended, Shearer could have only one member of his first-choice back four, Steven Taylor, available to contain a Villa side that is adept on the counter attack and still has a chance of finishing in fifth place.

Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel has warned Newcastle they will have to work extremely hard for what could be the most important victory in the club’s history.

“I know we’ve already qualified for the Europa League but we are professionals and we do want to do the best we can all the time and we do want to secure that fifth spot,” the American said.

With West Brom already condemned to a return to Division Two, Newcastle are one of four clubs who will enter the final day in danger of filling the two other relegation places.

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE STANDINGS

Of the four, Middlesbrough have the toughest task with Gareth Southgate’s side obliged to win at West Ham, hope that champions United beat Hull by a big enough margin for them to make up a four-goal deficit in terms of goal difference.

Sunderland are the best-placed in terms of points but Ricky Sbragia’s side have arguably the toughest final fixture with Chelsea, the visitors to the Stadium of Light, looking to sustain their recent form ahead of the following weekend’s FA Cup final.

The Black Cats will do down if they lose and both Hull and Newcastle win but Sbragia, a former member of Manchester United’s coaching staff, will field a squad capable of winning at the KC Stadium.

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are expected to be rested for a match that takes place barely 72 hours before United take on Barcelona in the Champions League final in Rome.

But this season has provided plenty of evidence regarding the depth of United’s squad and Sbragia is confident his old boss, Alex Ferguson, will not let him down.

“Whatever team they put out will believe they can win the game and that is all we can ask for,” Sbragia said.

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has promised that he will field all his top stars at Sunderland. “I don’t want to rest a lot of people because they need to maintain their physical shape and also the way we want them to play,” the Dutchman said. “If I rest too many people then I don’t think it’s good preparation for Wembley.”

With Liverpool virtually assured of second place, the only unresolved issue in the top half of the table is the battle for seventh spot and the final slot in next season’s Europa League, the successor to the UEFA Cup.

Fulham, who entertain Everton at Craven Cottage, are in pole position but could yet be caught by Tottenham, who finish their season at Liverpool. — AF

Champions League final - O’Shea revels in new-found status at United

MANCHESTER: John O’Shea insists he is not taking his Champions League final place for granted but admits his new-found status at Manchester United has vindicated his decision to stay at Old Trafford.

The Ireland international has been a fringe player for the past decade at United and has fulfilled a wide number of roles.

But, at the age of 28, he has finally established himself as a regular in Alex Ferguson’s team this season, making 53 appearances in a campaign that has already yielded three pieces of silverware: the World Club Cup, the League Cup and the Premier League trophy.

And after he scored the only goal in United’s 1-0 Champions League semi-final first leg victory over Arsenal, Ferguson claimed the defender would be in his team should United make the final.

O’Shea was an unused substitute in last year’s victory over Chelsea in Moscow and is refusing to get excited about Wednesday’s game against Barcelona until he is on the pitch.

He said: “The manager might have said something about me starting a few weeks ago but you never take it for certain until you know for definite when he names the team in the team meeting.

“It is nice to know that but we wait and see. It is going to be special game and hopefully we win.

“I have played in nearly all the games in the Champions League this year. I have played a part in getting us to the final but so has everyone else.

“I am sure the lads who are on the bench will be thinking there could be a hero on there waiting to come on and score for us.”

Ferguson was unusually fulsome in his praise for O’Shea.

“He doesn’t get the celebrity status that a lot of Manchester united players get,” the Scot observed. “But he would play anywhere for me – he’s played in goal for a short period, he’s played all along the back four and in midfield and because of injuries to Gary Neville and Wes Brown he has become a permanent fixture.

“He takes his place in Rome because he deserves it, he has a heck of a work rate and he’s shown that by playing consistently, his performances have improved with it.

“He’s a fantastic type of person, he’s well mannered and well brought up and has good intelligence and he has got work rate, he likes to work in training so we are pleased with him.”

O’Shea is adamant he has never thought about leaving United despite regularly missing out on their biggest matches.

The defender claims that United’s success and Ferguson’s personal touch has been key to keeping a big squad happy.

He added: “It is the man-management side that does it. He makes you feel involved. He might come around and say ‘you are not playing tomorrow but you are playing on Wednesday week and I want you ready for that game’.

“It is just the little things and his experience that makes him the best in the business.

“I would never just stay at a club for the sake of winning a medal. I would never do that. It would always be the case if I felt I wasn’t playing a part I would leave.”

O’Shea regularly watches Spanish football on television and says that Barcelona’s high-scoring and free-flowing play has been a regular topic of conversation at United’s Carrington training ground.

He continued: “When you see them play at the Nou Camp and teams attack them, it seems to leave their opponents vulnerable to the counter-attack.

“You just have to look at the amount of goals they have scored this year. I think they have three or four players up around the 30 mark.

“We won’t be attacking them too much because we know they have a huge attacking threat. But we are not too bad ourselves.” — AFP

Spain-Primera Division - Osasuna looking to exploit under-strength champs Barca

MADRID: With the league title now assured Barcelona can be forgiven for turning their attention to the Champions League final but for Osasuna, their opponents this weekend, it remains a crucial match.

Barcelona became champions without even taking to the field as second-placed Real Madrid lost away at Villarreal last Saturday.

The following day coach Pep Guardiola sent out a team largely of reserves against Mallorca but while they lost that did not dampen the celebrations.

Today, Guardiola will be without Andres Iniesta and Thierry Henry, who he hopes will be fit for the Champions League final next Wednesday against Manchester United, while he is also likely to rest a number of others including Lionel Messi.

For Osasuna they dropped into the relegation zone after drawing with Sevilla and now they face the monumental task of saving themselves against Barcelona and Real Madrid in the last two weeks of the season.

“The team want Barcelona to continue their celebrations onto the pitch but the reality is that they are not going to give us anything. They will play with those you do not usually expect to start and they will want to make an impression and then you will still have (Eric) Abidal, (Dani) Alves and Bojan (Krkic) in the team,” said Osasuna striker Walter Pandiani.

“We have to give more respect to Barcelona than anybody as they are the champions and for those who do not normally play it is only because they have ahead of them Messi, Henry and Iniesta.”

While Real Madrid, who take on Mallorca next, have second place assured the battle for European places below them is rife.

Sevilla are keeping their fingers crossed that their talismanic striker Frederic Kanoute will be fit to face Deportivo la Coruna, who are pushing hard for a place in the Europa Cup. Depor are two points adrift of sixth place but know that with Valencia and Villarreal also going head-to-head they have a good chance of making up ground.

It is set to be a crucial Valencia derby and Villarreal come into the match in better form on the back of beating Real Madrid.

Comparatively, fourth-placed Atletico Madrid have what appears to be an easier task as they take on an Athletic Bilbao side which is already safe from relegation and low in morale after losing the Copa del Rey final. — AFP

World Cup qualifiers - Off-form Ronaldinho out of Brazil squad

RIO DE JANEIRO: Off-form Ronaldinho was left out of Brazil’s squad on Thursday for next month’s World Cup qualifiers and the Confederations Cup.

Striker Ronaldo, who has not played for his country since the last World Cup, was also overlooked despite a promising start to his latest comeback with Corinthians.

Brazil face Uruguay in Montevideo on June 6 and host South American group leaders Paraguay in Recife four days later.

Coach Dunga also sprang a surprise by including uncapped Gremio goalkeeper Victor along with four other home-based players – fullbacks Kleber and Andre Santos, midfielder Ramires and striker Nilmar.

Ramires and Andre Santos are both uncapped while Nilmar, whose career has been plagued by injuries, has played twice for his country.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Gomes was recalled after an injury to Doni, the regular second choice after Julio Cesar.

Dunga said he wanted Ronaldinho to return to full form before he picked him again.

“I’m going to do everything possible to help him recover,“ he said.

“I have confidence in him, he’s a special player. He’s having a bad time but I hope he can get over this.”

Ronaldinho has failed to settle at AC Milan since his move from Barcelona last year and has recently been mostly confined to the bench.

The playmaker was substituted in the 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw in Ecuador last March after one of his worst performances at international level.

He then found himself among the substitutes for the following game at home to Peru and came on late in the match with Brazil already leading 3-0.

Ronaldo has scored eight goals for Corinthians in his latest comeback following a serious injury with AC Milan last year, however most of them were in the regional Paulista championship against modest opponents.

The 32-year-old is still trying to regain full fitness.

“We want to see the Ronaldo that we all know,” said Dunga. “But he’s going to have to prove with his club that he’s ready to be called up.”

The coach added: “We’ve stuck to our guns and picked players who are doing well at club level. We have to use common sense to do the best for Brazil.”

Brazil are second in the 10-team South American World Cup qualifying group with 21 points from 12 games, three behind Paraguay.

The top four teams qualify directly for next year’s Finals in South Africa. The fifth play off for another place against the fourth team from the CONCACAF region. — Reuters

Copa Libertadores - Defensor knock favourites Boca out of Libertadores Cup

BUENOS AIRES: Pre-tournament favourites Boca Juniors were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores in a surprise 1-0 loss to Uruguay visitor Defensor Sporting on Thursday.

Diego De Souza scored with a fierce shot in the 28th minute in the Bombonera to lift Defensor into the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

That set up quarter-finals of Cruzeiro verus Sao Paulo, Caracas verus Gremio, Estudiantes verus Defensor and Palmeiras verus Nacional.

The first legs are next Wednesday and Thursday with the return legs a week later.

Brazilian clubs have dominated the competition so far, with four teams through to the last eight.

The Copa Libertadores finals are scheduled for July 1 and 8.

Boca have won the title four times since 2000 and were aiming for a record-equalling seventh crown.

Defensor have never won the competition and equalled their best performance by reaching the quarter-finals.

Juan Roman Riquelme played for Boca after recently returning from almost six weeks out with a foot injury.

Riquelme, Boca’s playmaker, looked short of match fitness and Defensor’s counterattacks worked well.

Boca’s best chance came after 43 minutes when Sebastian Battaglia’s header was tipped to safety by Defensor goalkeeper Martin Silva.

The Argentine club became increasingly desperate as the game wore on but could not break down the disciplined Defensor rearguard.

Jose rubbishes link with Real

ROME: Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho on Thursday dampened rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid by saying that he was “99.9%” sure of remaining at the newly-crowned Italian champions.

Florentino Perez, favourite to win the race to become Real’s next president, is reportedly keen to lure Mourinho to the Bernabeu Stadium next season.

Perez has singled out the former Chelsea boss as his number one target to take over from Juande Ramos should he succeed in winning the June 14 presidential election, according to Thursday’s Gazzetta dello Sport.

But Mouri nho, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “I’m 99.9% sure to stay at Inter. “But the person who’ll coach Real next season will be a very lucky man.

“Personally, the most important thing is that my president knows everything and knows everything about me, not the media or because someone told him. The first to know if there was something (happening) would be my president.” — AFP

Wolfsburg aim to devour Bremen and win maiden league title

BERLIN: Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath says his side must shut out all distractions on the final day of the season today with guests Werder Bremen the final obstacle to the Wolves’ maiden Bundesliga title.

With the title race to be decided during today’s final round, Magath’s side are two points clear of second-placed defending champions Bayern Munich who host fourth-placed Stuttgart at their Allianz Arena stadium.

While Bremen are licking their wounds after their UEFA Cup final defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday in Istanbul, Magath says his side will show their opponents no pity or risk playing for the draw which will give them the title.

“We certainly won’t be playing for a draw – we don’t know how to do that,” said Magath, whose side are undefeated at home this season and have only dropped two league points at the Volkswagen Arena all season.

“We have a fantastic record at home.

“With our own fans behind us, we want to take the decisive step and clinch the German championship.

“Bremen have a top team, they made that very clear when they beat us (5-2 in the quarter-finals) in the German Cup at home earlier this year.”

Wolfsburg have had no trouble scoring this season – between them striker Edin Dzeko and Grafite have netted 51 goals and are closing in on the league record of 53 set by Bayern’s Gerd Mueller and Uli Hoeness in 1972/73.

Having secured a Champions League berth for next season, Wolfsburg must slip against Bremen, who face Leverkusen in the German Cup final on May 30, if their title rivals are to stand any chance of catching them.

Mathematically, either Stuttgart or Bayern Munich can overtake Wolfsburg if Bremen win and there is a winner in Munich.

The last time the sides met in the German Cup Bayern inflicted a 5-1 defeat on Markus Babbel’s side and the former Bayern midfielder says he expects a much tighter battle this time.

“It was the first match after the winter break, we had a really bad day and deserved to lose heavily,” remembered Babbel.

“But we’re on a roll now and we’ve already hit our target of finishing in the top five, which is a sensational achievement by the team.

“I expect it to be extremely tense.

“We’re not harbouring dreams of the title, as I just can’t see it happening.

“A lot would have to happen for Wolfsburg to let it slip now.

“Second place is still realistic, although away to Bayern is a monumental task for us.

“But if we keep up our recent form, we’ll be hard to beat, even for Bayern.”

Stuttgart can still claim a Champions League berth even if they lose in Munich providing bitter rivals Karlsruhe – who are playing for survival at the foot of the table – beat fourth-placed Hertha Berlin at home. — AFP
