The month of January ended on a disappointing note for Atletico as the reigning europa league winners lost their last three fixtures. Los Colchoneros were dumped out of the Spanish Cup by arch rivals Real Madrid and suffered defeats against Sporting Gijon and Athletic Bilbao in the league.
In their last fixture against Bilbao, Atletico ended the fixture with ten men following the first half dismissal of Luis Perea. The loss means that Atletico have won only one of their eight fixtures in all competitions since the beginning of the new year.
Barcelona took revenge for their surprise loss to Hercules earlier this season by beating them 3-0 in the league last weekend. Lionel Messi was again at the heart of things for the Catalans as he netted two times in the fixture. Barcelona have a seven point lead at the top of La Liga going into this game against Atletico.
