LONDON: Manchester City’s new Brazilian forward Robinho has already set his sights on the Premier League title, he told the club on Tuesday.
“I want to help the manager and the team to win the Premier League, that’s my ambition here,” the £32.5mil (US$58mil) signing told the club’s website (www.mcfc.co.uk) in his first interview since the deadline day transfer.
“I knew that Manchester City are a very big club, there’s is a great team there already and this is an exciting project.”
The former Real Madrid player looked to have been set for a deadline day move to Chelsea before City, backed by new investors – the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment – stole in to sign the Brazilian international on a four-year deal.
Robinho joins Brazil team-mates Jo and Elano at City, who finished ninth last season.
“I play with Jo and Elano in our national team, they are my friends ... Having such great players at City was one of the reasons why I decided to come here.”
The 24-year-old arrived in London on Tuesday to meet new manager Mark Hughes and hundreds of fans have already purchased ‘Robinho 10’ replica shirts.
“That makes me very happy, and I want to repay this excitement by performing on the pitch, and scoring lots of goals for the fans.”
Robinho has flown to South America for Brazil’s 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia.
