The Northern Lions take on Selangor in a top-of-the-table Super League clash in Kangar with the knowledge that the winner will have a clear run to the league crown.
For now, the Red Giants are the favourites after opening up a two-point lead over Perlis on Tuesday night.
But Perlis coach Irfan Bakti believes that a victory over Selangor tonight could be the turning point of the season for his team.
“Barring a miracle, the Super League title is heading to either Perlis or Selangor this year. For me, this is the most crucial league game of the season,” said Irfan when contacted in Kangar yesterday.
“We will go all out for victory. Although we have not beaten Selangor in three previous meetings this year, I am confident we can get it right this time.”
In the league’s first round encounter in Shah Alam, the Northern Lions went down 1-2 to Selangor while they drew 1-1 in Kangar and lost 1-2 away in the two-legged FA Cup semi-finals.
Perlis will need to come up with something extra special to bring down the Red Giants as the latter are on a high after stringing together a 14-match unbeaten streak since a 1-2 league defeat to Terengganu on March 31.
Perlis are also hoping that their midweek rest would come in handy against the table toppers.
While Selangor were in action in the 3-1 win over Johor FC on Tuesday, Perlis have been inactive since beating Penang 3-0 last Saturday.
“The mini-break came at a vital time as we had a very tiring period before that, playing a match every three days. My players are fresh, injury-free and raring to return to the top of the standings tomorrow (today),” said Irfan.
With six matches remaining for each team, Selangor lead the league on 47 points, two ahead of Perlis with Kelantan a distant third on 37 points.
