The Elephants, who won the title in 2004, will be relegated together with basement side Police.
And Pahang coach Dollah Salleh offered no excuses, saying that the Super League was no testing ground for teams.
The former international said that it was a bad gamble to maintain a relatively raw set of players, whom he inherited at the tail-end of the season.
“The Super League is all about competition and results. And Pahang did not have the experience to challenge strongly in the top flight. I tried my best but there was nothing much I could do to save the team from going down,” said Dollah, who was relieved from the Shahzan Muda club side to take charge of the state team.
“I must stress that there has to be some quality in teams taking part in the competition or they will end up at the bottom.
“I even had problems whipping up the Pahang players in training. Most of them are newcomers without any prior playing experience in the President’s Cup.
“I have spoken to the Pahang FA president (Tengku Muda Tengku Abdul Rahman) of our plans for the new season. At least half the team will have to go.”
The Elephants were beaten 1-5 by champions Selangor in their final fixture at the Shah Alam Stadium and they cannot overtake Penang to avoid relegation. They will finish one rung above basement side Police in the 14-team competition.
Under the competition rules, the bottom two teams will be relegated to the Premier League. But the FAM may change the format of competition and it could save Pahang and Police from taking the drop.
