SHAH ALAM: Perlis continued to breathe down Selangor’s neck in the race for the Super League title when they thrashed Negri Sembilan 4-0 at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi last night.
Seasoned campaigner Mohd Nizaruddin Yusop was the toast for the Northern Lions, scoring a hat-trick in the 28th, 58th and 77th minutes before Mohd Fakri Saarani added the other goal a minute from regulation time.
But Perlis hopes of pulling level with Selangor at the top of the standings were dashed when Amirulhadi Zainal scored a late goal to give the Red Giants a 1-0 win over KL Plus at the Shah Alam Stadium.
With four matches more to go in the 14- team league, Selangor have 51 points and maintained their two-point advantage over Perlis.
Selangor, who are gunning to win the Super League title for the first time, made life difficult for themselves by giving KL Plus much possession of the ball.
The Red Giants had the better of the early exchanges but strikers Mohd Safee Sali, R. Surendran and midfielder C. Premnath were unable to convert the sitters to goals in the first half.
KL Plus employed a defensive approach and packed their defence with Norhafiz Zamani Misbah and Irwan Fadli Idrus doing a good job to ward off the Selangor onslaught.
KL Plus had a good chance to go in front when Shafiq Rahim beat goalkeeper Mohd Hamsani Ahmad with a dipping shot only to see the ball hit the woodwork in the 69th minute.
In the 78th minute, Amirulhadi netted the winner for Selangor.
He picked up Surendran’s through pass to easily slot the ball past goalkeeper Razi Effendi Suhit.
