Halim Napi Face Disciplinary Board Over Assault

Kelantan goalkeeper Halim Napi is set to face the wrath of the FA of Malaysia’s (FAM) disciplinary board at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya today. The 38-year-old former international has been hauled up by the board for assaulting Negri Sembilan centreback Mohd Zafuan Abdul Razak after their FA Cup semi-final, first-leg match at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru on April 7. It was his second red card offence in less than two months, having been sent off in the highly-charged Selangor-Kelantan Super League match at the Shah Alam Stadium on Feb 28.

Halim has mostly hogged the headlines for all the wrong reasons in his turbulent 15-year career. He was once even handed a life ban by the FAM for charging at a referee in 1997. The temperamental Halim had promised to turn over a new leaf this season. Instead, he went back to his old ways, forcing even the Kelantan FA to suspend him indefinitely after the assault incident in Kota Baru. And with that, he can now forget about picking up his first major silverware when Kelantan play Selangor in the FA Cup final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.

“I guess I have lost a golden opportunity,” said Halim from Kota Baru yesterday.“I was longing for my first major silverware in the M-League with Kelantan this season. I have never won a champion’s medal in my professional career and this is my best chance but it looks like it is out of my reach now.“I hope Kelantan will lift the FA Cup trophy on Saturday.” Meanwhile, Selangor team manager Zakaria Abdul Rahim and KL Plus coach Mat Zan Mat Aris will also face the disciplinary board for speaking out on policy matters without FAM’s consent.

Last year’s Bardhan Cup semi-finalists, Penang and Selangor, will also appear before the board today. The two teams were involved in a free-for-all during their semi-final, second-leg tie at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya on Nov 22.
