Selangor dissapoint Kelantan - TM FA Cup Final 25.04.2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor lifted the FA Cup for a record fifth time when they defeated Kelantan 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out after both teams failed to break the 1-1 deadlock in extra-time at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil last night.

The real drama of the match, which ended 0-0 in full-time, only kicked in during extra-time.

Mohd Norfarhan Mohd put Kelantan, looking for their first trophy in 88 years, ahead in the 93rd minute but skipper Mohd Amri Yahyah equalised for Selangor in the 101st minute.

The drama continued into the penalty shoot-out. And there was heartbreak for Kelantan when Indra Puta Mahayuddin’s first kick hit the post and Zairul Fitree Ishak ballooned his team’s third kick. Only Ahmad Ezrie Shafizie scored for Kelantan.

Selangor netted all four attempts through Khairul Anuar Baharum, Masriq Baharom, D. Surendran and Mohd Safee Sali.

It was a real blow to the Red Warriors and their passionate fans.

Many had come expecting a high-scoring game as both Kelantan and Selangor are noted for their strong attacking flair.

Unfortunately for the 80,000-odd crowd, there was not much action in normal time.

Selangor started aggressively, forcing three quick corners in the opening four minutes. But Kelantan goalkeeper Shahrizan Ismail showed a safe pair of hands.

The game was scrappy for much of the time, with both teams unable to make their chances count.

Indra had the best chance to put Kelantan ahead in the 29th minute. His snap shot from 35m out beat goalkeeper Mohd Hamsani Ahmad but not the woodwork.

The Selangor forwards were barely effective either as Safee and Rudie Ramli failed to carve out any chances.

Selangor coach K. Devan made a tactical change at the hour mark, bringing on Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal for R. Surendran.

Ten minutes later Kelantan coach Peter Butler played his trump card when he brought on the nippy Che Hishamuddin Hassan for Mohd Rizal Fahmi to inject more pace into their engine room.

Indra again had the best chance to wrap up the match in the 85th minute. However, with only Mohd Hamsani to beat, he ballooned his shot.

Kelantan switched into top gear at the start of extra-time and duly went ahead in the 93rd minute.

Kelantan skipper Mohd Badri Radzi sent in a cross and Norfarhan’s flying header sailed past Mohd Hamsani.

The goal woke up the Red Giants. And it was skipper Mohd Amri who led by example in the 101st minute.

D. Surendran floated in a cross for Mohd Amri squeezed in a low header past Kelantan custodian Shahrizan.
