It was a frightening experience for Negri Sembilan in a war-like zone at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru on Tuesday night. The home fans turned hostile and violent after Negri had beaten Kelantan’s 1-0 in a FA Cup semi-final first-leg match. It was the second time in a week that Kelantan were beaten at home by Negri after a 1-2 defeat in the Super League. Fortunately, the Negri team came out unharmed and coach Wan Jamak Hassan thanked the police, Kelantan FA and their president, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, for taking special measures to ensure their safety.

“Except for my skipper, Shukor (Adan), Idris (Karim) and (Ching) Hong Aik, the majority of the players in my team are youngsters. It was the first time that they faced such intense hostility and it was a very scary for them,” said Wan Jamak in a telephone interview after returning with the team to Seremban yesterday. “We were locked inside the stadium for more than an hour after the match before the police, Tan Sri Musa and his KAFA officials ensured that we returned to the hotel safely.” Wan Jamak felt that the unruly behaviour of the fans could have been avoided if not for the action of Kelantan goalkeeper Halim Napi. The veteran goalkeeper immediately after the final whistle raced up to the centre line to take a swipe at Mohd Zafuan Abdul Razak and then stepped on the fallen Negri defender.
