K. RAJAGOBAL has been officially appointed as coach for the Laos Sea Games Under-23 squad while the FA of Malaysia (FAM) will be naming the senior team coach within two weeks.FAM will decide when Rajagobal, currently the Young Tigers Under-19 coach, will start his duties with the Under-23 squad, on a later date.He will be assisted by his Young Tigers counterparts -- Tan Cheng Hoe and Faozi Mukhlas. It is most likely that Rajagobal and his assistants will keep their coaching responsibilities with Young Tigers.
The Sea Games squad will consist mainly those in the Young Tigers team while eight players from the senior squad who are still eligible will also be called up.
FAM deputy president Datuk Redzuan Sheikh Ahmad said several tournaments have been arranged for the Under-23 squad."The first tournament is the Inter-Continental Under-23 Championships in July where Rajagobal will have a chance to gauge his players against top class teams," said Redzuan after the FAM council meeting in Kelana Jaya yesterday.Among the teams invited are Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand. The tournament venue has been shifted from Kuala Terengganu to Kuala Lumpur.
"The next assignment is the Merdeka Tournament (Aug 1-15), where the Under-23 squad will again represent Malaysia in the annual tournament. We are also making other arrangements for the team," he said.Redzuan said FAM will make sure the Under-23 squad are well-prepared for the Sea Games."It's going to be a tough tournament. I have watched the Under-23 teams of Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia and they are good."
Meanwhile, FAM is facing a problem naming the senior team coach as the short-listed candidate is tied up with a contract.Among those linked with the job are Shahzan Muda coach Dollah Salleh, Azraai Khor (Kedah) and Wan Jamak Hassan (Negri Sembilan)"We are still negotiating with the state FA concerned but I'm confident he will get his release very soon. We should name the coach within two weeks."The candidate will be offered a two-year contract and his job is to take Malaysian football to greater heights."He will be given a freehand to select players but of course, it must be approved by the association's selection committee," Redzuan said.
The yet-to-be-named coach -- when he starts his assignment -- will have a heavy task as the first match is against Manchester United on July 25.It is worthy to note that FAM, despite making it a priority to improve Malaysia's world ranking, is only arranging three high quality matches for the senior team, excluding the two 2011 Asian Cup qualifiers against Uzbekistan in November.Redzuan said the association is aware of the importance of improving the country's world ranking."That is why, we are arranging two or three matches for the senior team," he added.Malaysia are currently ranked 161st in the world.
