Controversial Di Canio wants top post at West Ham

Paolo Di Canio wants the vacant manager’s spot at English Premier League club West Ham United, the controversial Italian’s agent said on Thursday.

Di Canio believes he can pick up the mantle left after Alan Curbishley this week stepped down over a disagreement with the club’s management.

“We have made moves to talk to West Ham and advised them that he wants to be considered,” agent Phil Spencer told BBC Sport.

“He wouldn’t be putting himself up for the job if he didn’t think he was capable of doing it.

“He just wants the opportunity to sit in front of the decision makers at West Ham to tell them what he would do and how he would take them forward.

He added: “Unfortunately he can’t do that unless they invite him to do so.”

Di Canio signed for West Ham from Sheffield Wednesday in 1999, making 118 appearances over four years to earn legendary status with Upton Park fans.

“Paolo Di Canio had lots of support from fans that would like to see him, I think he is the fans’ favourite for the job,” added Spencer.

“But that doesn’t always mean anything so we’re hopeful that we will get the opportunity to at least speak to West Ham.”
